Harvestmen

DSCN8305.JPG

Three facts about harvestmen (daddy long legs):

1. They are not spiders and not even closely related to spiders. More closely related to scorpions and horseshoe crabs.
2. They have no venom glands. The myth about them having the most potent venom in the world but lacking fangs to deliver it is complete bunk. They don't have fangs, but also no venom.
3. They are often parasitized by mites, which is the point of this post. This one has a large Erythraeid mite on its body and two other mites on its legs. I didn't want to rip the leg off to identify them under the scope. No one has studied how mite infestations affect the harvestman. You would think it would have a negative impact, but I often see harvestmen with several mites that don't seem to be bothered by them. Of course, they may keel over dead when I'm not watching them, so who knows?
Bonus fact: There are around 10,000 species in the order Opiliones (Harvestmen). I can tell you this is very likely in the Leiobunum genus, but I don't know enough about them to figure out the species.
