Harnessed Tiger Moth
This is Apantesis sp. My best guess is Harnessed Tiger Moth (Apantesis phalerata), but getting a species level identification with any certainty involves looking at the genitals, which is a common necessity in moths. I don't need to know its species enough to want to catch it and find its genitals, likely killing it in the process. I like to know how an animal I see fits into the local ecology, but all of these tiger moths are generalists that aren't really picky about host plants. So I'm not going to get any enlightenment out of knowing its specific name - or the name humans have assigned it, more accurately. I'm happy that a really cool insect was in my woods, and the moth is happy that no one pulled out its genitals with forceps.
